Jennifer SavageNew York Writer Blends Love of Romance Stories and Comic Books
New York author Jennifer Savage has had an almost lifelong interest in romantic tales and comic books. She grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, and was exposed to comics in the third grade. Her friend had a big box full of Veronica and Betty, Archie, and Richie Rich comics, and the two girls couldn't get enough of them.

"We'd read the same ones over and over," says the 36-year-old writer.

In junior high she began reading romance novels. Her favorite author was Jane Austen. While getting her Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University, she worked at the popular comic book store Forbidden Planet.

"There I got a second education in everything from Electra to Boris Vallejo," Savage says.

Savage is the author of the MyRomanceStory.com novellas "Passion's Prize," "Helen's Alibi" and this month's "The Hunted." She is currently working on a paranormal romance novel, set in Regency England. In it, a princess of the fay comes to visit two human sisters and witches living in London. The fairy princess encounters a lone male shapeshifter who, searching for more of his kind, mistakes her for a shapeshifter. Together the two embark on an adventure filled with danger and romance.

When Savage isn't working on her novel or writing MyRomanceStory.com novellas, she enjoys going to museums, watching Doris Day/Rock Hudson films and studying mythology.

Romance Writing Heats Up
As everyone knows, sex sells, and it's never truer than in romance fiction. So today's novels tend to downplay the courtship side of the story and head straight to the bedroom! In 2004 Borders began carrying women's erotica. Kensington has since introduced its own erotic line, and Harlequin has chimed in with the Spice imprint.

Perhaps it is part of the Sex in the City culture, but the emotional elements are falling by the wayside in many lines of the romance publishing industry.

"There doesn't need to be that period of wooing, the developing of emotions," Kensington editor John Scognamiglio told USA Today. "If the heroine sees a guy she wants to sleep with, she's just going to go after him."

Many subgenres have seen this shift. As long as the sex is vivid and convincing, erotica can be found everywhere from chick lit to paranormal romances.
